Managing Change and Transitions
September is the month when our kids return to school, signifying the end of summer and the beginning of Fall. It is a time of transition, and transitions are what help to soften the impact of change. Here are some tips for managing change using transitions to pace yourself….
-
If you know that change is coming, try to plan for it. The less there is that is unexpected, the more in control you will feel
-
Try to avoid too much change happening at once. If you are going to change jobs, don't move house or get divorced at the same time!
-
Maintain familiar routines in times of change. They will help your life to feel more normal.
-
Bring some familiar possessions with you if you have to move.
-
If you have to move, keep in touch with old friends for support. Long distance phone plans are relatively inexpensive these days.
-
If the change makes you feel bad, seek help. Talk to trusted friends or find a counsellor you feel comfortable with.
-
Understand that change is tiring - everyday routines we take for granted save us energy.
-
Recognise and accept that change can trigger feelings of insecurity and fear, but this too will pass.
-
If a change is unwanted, overwhelming or threatens your wellbeing, consider asking for spiritual help and the option to surrender
