Putting Money in Perspective
Does money seem to burn a hole in your pocket? Do you worry about not having enough for your old age? Do you measure your worth by how much money you earn? If so you are not alone. Here are some tips for a more positive perspective on money management:
-
Notice the abundance already in your life - the wild flowers, walks in nature, the family and friends you are blessed with, your home and its comforts, your health, simple pleasures like mealtimes. Count the blessings in your life and realize how rich you already are.
-
While money is important it does not create happiness. What brings real happiness is connection with others, loving relationships and doing work that makes a difference in the world. (even as a volunteer)
-
Give to others and your life will be richer. Whether it is time, interest or money, being generous to others spreads happiness around.
-
Be aware of your patterns and assumptions about earning, spending, saving or giving away money. These usually originate from childhood messages, but you can make different and wiser choices now.
-
Earning enough money has a lot to do with valuing yourself. If you don't think you deserve it you may unconsciously push it away.
-
There are lots of ways to spend less – here are a few...
-
bring a packed lunch on car trips and store everything in a cooler
-
use a water filter instead of bottled water
-
choose dinner recipes and make a list of ingredients before shopping
-
buy clothes and shoes out of season, e.g. buy winter stuff in the summer
-
cut open shampoo and face cream containers to access what is left
-
chop up fresh herbs and freeze for later use
-
buy berries in the summer when cheap and freeze for the winter
-
cycle or walk instead of driving short distances
-
shop around for the best phone deal – I have 400 minutes of call overseas a month for $10
