Giving Up Sugar
Day 10 and I am doing well! After deciding to give up sugar (yet again), and focus my attention on losing 15 pounds, increasing exercise and eating more vegetables, I have 10 days of success to report. Here’s what helped:
-
Making a firm decision to change was crucial. A decision cuts across all previous thoughts, feelings and behaviour and creates a new path.
-
Deciding to do a herbal cleanse called “Wild Rose” really helped. It gave me a structured program for 12 days to change my eating habits – basically I could eat all I wanted except sugar, dairy and wheat.
-
Eating enough protein and vegetables for main meals kept me sustained and reduced sugar cravings
-
Reading a weight loss book helped me understand that nothing will change unless I change. My behaviour is the key.
-
Putting a chart up with my weight and measurements helped me monitor progress. I recorded days off sugar and exercise taken
-
Having enough emotional support is crucial. Addictions keep a lid on emotions, so when you stop, the feelings will come up so you need extra places to express them whether counseling or groups
-
Backing up my decision with strategies for when I was tempted was helpful, e.g. I had a juice at Starbucks instead of coffee
-
Feeling better and lighter kept me encouraged and motivated
-
Having a goal in mind – i.e. to lose weight for a certain event helped
-
As each day passed my resolution got stronger.
-
Lastly supporting others to lose weight motivates me to be a role model
